Gleefull

OMG it’s past four in the morning! I watched eleven episodes of Glee and although I am in no way done (eleven more to go) I gotta sleep now because tomorrow I have to set out and earn my livelihood.

At first I dismissed it as some teenybop thing, a lengthier version of High School Musical (which I haven’t yet seen but Zac Efron is cute). Today I was watching some videos in Youtube and somehow came across the Glee songs, gave them a trial listen, liked it and so I ended up watching eleven straight episodes, taking only a dinner break.

Plotwise, nothing new. American high school kids, football (the American version), cheerleading, teen pregnancy, a school singing group hoping to win some competitions. But what makes it different is the singing. And the songs are familiar. Can’t Fight This Feeling – REO Speedwagon, Single Ladies – Beyonce, Keep Holding On – Avril Lavigne, I’ll Stand By You - The Pretenders, Somebody To Love – Queen, and much much more. It’s a treat for the ears.

Thus, for your listening pleasure here is the cast of Glee singing “Alone” by Heart. Enjoy.

  2. Poor Kim. I completely understand how much it hurts your tender male ego to watch this kind of stuff. The plot, if you would call it one, is mediocre at its best, but the music is good, isn't it? And the best part is you know all the songs and can sing along to every one of them. I always love old favourites being sung by fresh new young people.

  3. Never been a fan of High School Musical, hence got that 'preconceived notion' about this Glee ;)

Friends and The Simpsons (and recently, Castle) are still the best!

  4. I had downloaded and completed watching the whole 1st season, the story isn't much, didn't care enuf even to remember their names, but I too love their "versions" of oldies.
I like the one where the "pregnant chick" sings "Papa don't preach" unplugged, very orizinal.
And If I'm not wrong, you're probably going nuts over the guy with the mohawk, I know cos' my gf does.. :P (Need to take some singing lessons.. hmm)

  5. Jona - Try watching Glee, if not for the story at least for the music.

blackestred - My favourite song, so far, is Take a Bow, followed by the mash-up of It's My Life and Confessions.
And among the guys, I can't decide which one to choose yet, mohawk vs good kid vs the singing dancing rapping teacher..

  6. Ah yup, that's why I love the music. I know each and every one of them. They covered it really well too, giving it their own distinct flavor. But that is the ONLY good thing about this series.

Lolzzzzz @ Blackestred. My girl and her brother's girl are both crazy about the guy with the mohawk. Whats with women and Mohawks? When I had a mohawk, the same women criticized me saying I was too old for this and it made me look like a rebellious teen, and yet when somebody on TV had that same mohawk cut, they went gaga all over that person. Will never understand women. Sigh.

  7. @Aduhi: No offense, but the singing dancing rapping teacher seems to be a little bit too in touch with his feminine side, I mean, remember when he was seducing the she-male coach?? That was totally gross.. at least for me!

@illu: You just can't sport a Mohawk just cos' it's the IN thing, or you like it, or you saw it on Tatanka and thought it would look good on you. You need to be able to PULL IT OFF! hehe..

  8. Hmm, none of the guys in Glee appeal to me. Great soundtrack though. The only singing high school jock Ive ever fancied was John Travolta in Grease. And he wore leather and drove a mean machine so the man factor was still pretty high :D

  9. Oh and my fave so far is "Imagine" with those deaf/dumb kids heh

  10. I'm not a fan but one day the roomies were watching and I saw that scene where one of the guys sang 'Sweet Caroline' and I thought it was amazing. That was the only and last time I've seen the show though..

  11. blackestred - I prefer guys who are in touch with their feminine side and that doesn't mean they are suddenly girlish,I don't like the "pa rum rut" kinds. Haven't seen the seduction episode yet, but thanks for the spoiler :(

Kima - Did they call you "inla young" during your mohawk days? Sad, isn't it? You think you are looking pretty good and the only compliment (?)you receive is "Va inla young ve a!!" From what I heard many young boys are now sporting mohawks in Mizoram.

kuku - John Travolta hahaha.. but seriously I like his voice. But leather pants don't score too high for me.

Jerusha - You should listen to the other songs. Their cover is actually very good.

  14. Ah ha!! I can tell you secretly like it, OP. Sometimes you get bored listening to originals and this is when you should listen to fresh covers like this.

  17. Finally caught an episode of Glee last evening, the Madonna one. A friend kindly downloaded season 1 for me but my DVD drive's gone into broke mode. Gotta say I was a little disappointed with the much hyped music, as in the kids' voices didn't come off strong enough to me. Or maybe that's just a problem with my ears. The show struck me as being very pop culture. And I like interpretative covers though they do take some getting used to at first.

  18. J - yep it's very pop culture, and the story makes me want to shed tears of frustration. But I like the songs and that's the only reason I keep on watching episode after episode.

  19. The story and plot aside, along with the fantastical musical scores.. one praise worthy factor about GLEE, I should say, lies with the characterization of the characters. Let's consider the main protagonist Rachel Berry for example.. Rachel isn't what one may call the typical all American heroine usually seen in teen flicks. In fact, she's not all that attractive with a bad fashion sense (her friends often make fun about it behind her back),self centered to the point of craziness, fiercely competitive in not at all a good way,and so very unpopular in school. Thus, instead of the popular and perfect chick,GLEE has a geek as the leading actor. The glee club "New Directions" represents to a very large extent racial, gender, peer harmony and unity.. the jock, the prom queen, the slut, the misfit, the loner, and the geek stereotypes all come together in one platform wherein they learn to get along and become friends with whom they would never have thought about otherwise. No one is cut out and you don't have to worry about your 'image' whether you're fat, gay, or in a wheelchair. Me therefore thinks its a must watch for teens and grown-ups too can learn a little somethin' somethin'...

  20. dean - Thanks for visiting.

You look like a BIG fan of Glee. My favourite character is Sue Sylvester and her insults, esp of Will's hair. The other night I was at work and read Sue Sylvester's quotes online and trust me, I looked like a fool when I laughed out loud.

  21. Aduh, yeah believe me the storyline can get so dreadful at times. Big fan of the music that's for sure.. but the point is.. unlike the other teencentric prime time shows such as gossip girl, 90210 and the like, NOT at all good for adolescent viewing.. GLEE is fresh and fun and for a change an enjoyable show that at the same time they can learn from..

Love your blog by the way.. will keep on visiting if permission be granted.. that is :D

  22. dean - Have never watched Gossip Girl or 90210 or even The OC, I find them a big waste of time. Would rather download a movie.

And please please keep on visiting.
