A Story

So I went and got started on a story. I've written only the first chapter, you can read it here . Yes, I've created a new blog where I will post the stories I write, assuming I write more chapters and more stories. I thought a lot about stories the past week, and decided it was best to just jump in instead of looking from the outside and wondering how deep the water really is. Let’s hope I don’t drown or get lost among the sea weeds and ocean junk. Please read it and let me know what you think of it. If it's good, bad, okay, unbearably boring, silly, anything, whatever your opinion is let me know. I'm itching for your feedback. Say whatever is on your mind, my feelings won’t be hurt.

  1. Good start.. hope there's more coming.. Keep it up..
    Here's my two cents tho':
Not that I know a lot about stoary writing, but I was expecting a description of the characters, cos' it kinda made me feel like I'm reading a drama script instead of a story.. (But not in the Mizo kinda drama where it goes like:
    "Hei Kan lo leng aa..."
"EE! Nangni in ni maw.. lo leng ta che u..."
"Nia.. kan lo leng e.. ".. lolzz )
BTW.. I like the way they interrupt their sentences, makes it seem real..
PS: Get some more guys in the story.. hehe

  2. lol yeah I remember those Mizo dramas, especially the ones that used to come on radio, read/acted in that straight level tone without any emotions (Eee ka nu lungngai reng reng suh kan dam anga Pathian in ei tur chu min pe em em ang etc etc).

I'll work on the characters a bit more. I'll not make any changes now, but the other chapters will be more descriptive. Thanks for the feedback.

  3. Hey that's great, ambs. I checked your story and I like the Mizo milieu. The in thing in lit. is multi-culturalism and it always makes my skin crawl reading Mizo written fiction of sap characters with sap names doing sap things. Very infantile that. There are lots of human experiences that are universal and which other ppl of other cultures can relate to like love, pain, etc and you've got that right on the button, clap clap.

Also I've always found dialogues devilishly difficult to write but you don't seem to have a problem with it. Just try to make sure your different characters sound different and individualistic. Like we all have our distinctive ways of speaking, talking, expressing ourselves etc and that should be true of fictional characters as well. Not necessarily in an overt way but in small subtle ways. Characterisation is one thing we study a lot of in lit. classes and it's one of the things that differentiates a lit. piece from hmmmm this has something to yucks, what trash!

  4. So you went and did it. I think it's going to make easy reading, obviously the characters are going to become even more defined as the story progresses, but we are already getting an inkling of how they're going to be like even in the first chapter. Good luck with the rest :)

  6. J-Ditto here, I mean with the Mizo fiction with sap storyline. It just doesnt click. That's why I chose to go with something I know very well and something I can relate to.

Yes I will focus more on the characters. I know an interesting character makes the story come alive, even if the storyline has not much to offer. Maybe I should take online lit lessons from you :)
