Baby sometimes love just ain't enough

There's a reason why people don't stay where they are.
Baby, sometimes love just ain't enough.

There's a reason why people don't stay who they are.
Baby, sometimes love just ain't enough.

This song was immensely popular back in the early 90s, in fact I think it was '92, when I was in Class 9. There was no Internet from where you could immediately get the lyrics, and somebody would get the lyrics from somewhere and bring it to school and everybody else would copy it down. And of course we would copy the lyrics ourselves sometimes - play, pause, write down lyrics, rewind, play again, check the lyrics, go to next line and repeat the same process. There would be a few words/sentences which we couldn't get at all, and second, third and fourth opinions would be taken. I am one of those twisted people who couldn't ennjoy a song unless I knew all the lyrics, or at least most of it. I have compiled numerous songbooks, all of which are lost forever now. Even in this day and age I still copy down lyrics, I know I could get it instantly from the Internet but there is a certain pleasure, a certain thrill, a peculiar sense of winning in listening to a song and writing down the lyrics perfectly.

Coming back to this song "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough", a duet by Patty Smyth and Don Henley, I used to find the lyrics very strange, especially the few lines I mentioned up there. "There's a reason why people don't stay where they are" - is that a big deal? I used to think. They wanted to move, so they moved, end of story. I actually thought the song was talking about people physically moving, as in moving house. I never knew it was about moving on in a relationship. And I thought, why isn't love enough for people to live in one house, where's the connection here? Funny if you look at it that way.

"There's a reason why people don't stay who they are". I thought this was a spelling mistake. I'd ask myself if it wouldn't rather be "..people don't stay where they are?" It never dawned on me that it was about people changing with the passage of time, about people turning out to be someone completely different. And all these years I lived with that misconception.

I listened to this song again recently and didn't give it much thought. Until last night. I was travelling home and listening to it and suddenly it struck me. Why, it's about two people who love each other but cannot make their relationship work. Maybe they discovered that the other person is not who they thought he/she was, and maybe they just couldn't cope with the changes. Maybe they thought that being in love would make everything all right, somewhat like a magic pill that cures all your illnesses in one swallow. And maybe that once the scales fell from their eyes and they discovered the true person who they are with, they couldn't handle the situation and they ran.

Well, I guess love just ain't enough to make things work. You've got to have acceptance, forgiveness, understanding, and trust.

  1. Wow..!! Now this is something which everyone can relate to. Somewhere down the line everyone has got a broken heart, be it friendship, loved ones or family. And about that song, as when I first heard the song back then, what I can't understand was how can there be danger by loving someone too much. May be now I have got the answer.

  2. I was tooo young even to speak a few English sentences when this song was popular. However somewhere in my college I happened to listen and love it. Frankly, I too never understood the real meaning nor did I pay much attention. I found out the answer today now in your post. I enjoyed the read and thanks for reminding me about the song. Have downloaded just now :)

  3. hehe.. I believe I was in class -V when this song was so popular. LOL! I can relate to what you say.. and for me as a big fan of Metal and death metal, its really hard to get the lyrics, I still remember I had maintained a song book which is 2000 pages thick, so thick would weigh nearly somewhere btwn 250-500 gms.. and friends would often come over to my house just to borrow or copy some lyrics. Of all the lyrics that I've tried to copied, "CCR's songs are the toughest" heheh

  4. Kym – There is danger in loving too much esp when it is unrequited love, it turns into an obsession (think the movie Fatal Attraction). I’ve read somewhere that in every relationship there is always someone who loves more than the other and that person is more likely to get hurt.

PostMan – Can you believe this song has already become a classic? It seemed just like yesterday… funny how time flies by so quickly. I hope you enjoy listening to it once again.

mnowluck – So do you still keep that songbook of yours? Keep it safe, you don’t see things like that anymore, who knows it might even be declared a National Heritage fifty years from now. I can imagine how tough it must be to copy death metal songs, kudos to you for taking the time and trouble to copy them down.

  6. You bring back memories... lots and lots of them, back during our Calcutta days before the Babri Masjid demolition riots. Yup, early 90s indeed.

There was this manipur girl I had a crush on from our girl's school and this was our favorite song. hehehe... I dedicated this song to her during our School fete (one of the few times boys and girls were allowed to meet and interact) and she loved it. I loved it. And thinking back now, it was really stupid because its not even a "falling in love" love song. :D

  7. illusionaire - I too never realised it wasn't a "falling in love" song, and never thought about the lyrics too deeply either. It was popular, sung by a man and a woman,a beauftiful song, so it's only natural to assume it is a love song.

  8. "Sometimes love just ain't enough" - this is me commenting and downloading the song at the same time! :D I share your sentiments as a person who cannot enjoy his music unless I can understand what the vocalist is singing! Lyrics sometimes more important to me sometimes than the vocal line... and as far as I'm concerned, those are great lyrics!

  9. Andy - yes the contents of a song are very important to me too, and once you know the lyrics a song becomes much more beautiful, much more beautiful. Have a great time listening to the song.

  10. I used to always confuse Patty Smyth with Patti Smith. Apparently the Smyth part is pronounced as SMIGHT (as in the word might). I still recall MTV airing her other popular song "No Mistakes" and i can remember only one line from it.. "There are no mistakes in love.." etc etc.

  12. Mos-a - That's smighty nice of you, enlightening us with the correct pronunciation. I always thought it was pronounced "Smith". And I've never heard of "No Mistakes" either, let me look it up..

vana - thanks for the non-comment.

  13. Reminiscent season indeed!
This was one of the first songs I could play when I started learning guitar (Except for My Bonnie lies over the Ocean! :P), and it was totally worth getting my fingertips all hard and cracked for.
They don't make songs like these anymore..
I'd tried a million times then to get the lyrics right, but gave up only to try again..
But, sometimes, people don't stay who they are for no reason, and that's something not even they can explain. It's just the way the world turns, we just gotta get with the flow.. :(

  15. blackestred - have you ever noticed that as we get older we tend more and more to reminisce (obviously because we have more years behind us and more things to remember) but imagine 50 years from now (if we are still alive) how much more we would talk about the good old days (and bore everyone to tears)!!
There is some truth in your words that sometimes people don't stay who they are for no reason, because everything changes including people and our way of thought and the things we like and love. That particular thing for which we love a person could in the long run become the same quality that we detest.
And I watched the video, sorry to say I didn't like it much. The only thing I liked was the hairstyle of the guy in the black T-shirt with the blue guitar (4:17):P

  19. I can't believe it - we were talking about this song just the other night even though I hadn't heard it in years. I remember in school when I came up with the 'people don't stay who they are' I became a minor laughing stock. They laughed about it endlessly - say it all together 'people don't stay who they are' and laugh. I tried to explain, of course I probably did a horrible job so they never got it. But up there, that's exactly what i was trying to say. Quite simple now, looking back. But then, nothing was ever easy with high school kids :)

  20. Jerusha - must be quite tough, being a high school kid and trying to explain something which you weren't quite sure of yourself. Well I guess the joke's on them now (whoever they are).
