The Bucket List

Yeah, the movie. Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. About two terminally ill men who make a list of things they’ve always wanted to do before they “kick the bucket” – hence the name The Bucket List – and then they go and do all those things. It’s a sad movie, but I found it inspirational. It’s never too late to do the things you want to do, you are never too old, you will never know until you try, and all that jazz.

I remember my nineteenth birthday. My friends gave me a diary and a pen, and one of my first entries was about the birthday and how old I had become – I was nearly twenty - really juvenile, come to think of it- and I distinctly remember writing that I would love to do something great before I turned thirty. But eleven years go by in a flash, and here I am, no mountains conquered, no great novel written, no groundbreaking discoveries made, just a life lived worrying about the small things like where my next meal would come from, unimportant things like clothes and haircuts, complaining about the weather and the workplace and the traffic and holding petty grudges and not being appreciative enough.

I wish I could just chuck it all and go on an adventure. If only life wasn’t so full of duties and responsibilities and commitments. If only I was brave enough.

  6. Haven't you counted having read all the books on your shelf and much more, for instance? Yes, and the movies you've watched and critiqued for us who haven't? Just try writing your cv as if you're going to submit it for a job you badly want, you'll see how much you've done/achieved. 'To do something great' is too vague a goal. How will you know when you've scored it?

Some ten years ago, i made a list of the things i want to do. Several of them are done, some are not. But i also got to do other nice things i hadn't thought of then!

Wishing you all the best in your adventure.

  7. mesjay - Yeah I know I should be specific in the things I want to do. Reading the unread books, writing movie reviews/ writing cv all sounds good, but I was thinking more in the terms of something that requires uprooting myself and something that involved physical activity...think The Hobbit... well I guess I've been watching too many movies.

  11. I was writing the longest comment that I've ever written in my blogging years when I accidentally closed it. Aargh! I don't have the stamina to re-type it again, sorry :D

Anyways, don't feel that bad about it. IMHO I think your blog is one of the most well written ones in english by any Mizo. I wish I had the flair for writing, or the money to travel the world, or master some foreign language.

Thats why I made a list of my own. Number 1: to travel the world. I don't know when I'll ever be finished with this one. Number 2: Learn French. Not the basic stuff you learn at school. I'm talking serious. Number 3: Random acts of kindness. I know I'm not that great a person. Thats why this is in the list. Maybe someday I can drop the word 'random'...

The point is, you're right. "It’s never too late to do the things you want to do, you are never too old, you will never know until you try, and all that jazz".

Tetea - Thanks for the flattering words.

That's a short but good list you have there. I too have always wanted to travel, see the world and all that. Hope I will get to see some part of the world, someday...

  13. Yea, I totally agree with Tetea. Your blog is one of the finest and you update it regularly, unlike many of us. And that is a good thing. I'm sure you don't have to think much to write, your profile says it all. "You love words on paper". You are gifted with a great talent, keep on writing. I promise I'll buy every book that you publish :-)

  14. Mimi- That is sooo sweet of you, thanks a lot. I do think a lot before I write, okay there are times i just sit down and ideas pop into the head and then there are times when it just wouldn't work and I'd end up completely frustrated. Btw have you read my story (but not yet finished)? It's the first one on my Links list.
